What is Upbit?

So there I was, staring at CoinGecko at 3 AM on a Tuesday, trying to figure out why a totally obscure altcoin suddenly spiked 40% out of nowhere. Turns out, a massive chunk of that volume came from exactly one place—Upbit.

Seriously. Just one exchange.

I've traded on Binance and Kraken since 2019, right? Pretty standard stuff. But lately, I keep hitting this wall where South Korean retail volume absolutely dominates the price action of specific tokens. Which leads me straight to my massive, frustrating blind spot. What is Upbit? And how does a non-Korean resident even begin to touch it without getting instantly banned?

My Current Understanding of Asian Exchange Dominance

Here is what I managed to piece together so far (please correct me if I'm totally off base here):

Feature Standard Platforms Upbit
Primary Fiat USD / EUR KRW (Korean Won)
KYC Friction Moderate Extreme (Local bank required)
Altcoin Spikes Gradual global spread Violent, localized pumps

Back during the crazy bull run of 2021, I actually tried capturing the notorious "Kimchi Premium" spread. I failed miserably. I hit a brutal operational wall because South Korean regulations strictly mandate real-name verified bank accounts—specifically partnering with domestic places like K-Bank. It locked me out entirely. So right now, I'm sitting here watching an average of $2.5 billion in daily trading volume flash by, completely unable to participate.

The Big Ask: Shadowing the Whales

Since direct access seems nearly impossible for outsiders, I desperately need a reality check from you veterans. Here is my proposed logic map for tracking this stuff from the outside:

  • Monitor UPbit's KRW market listings for sudden volume surges compared to global pairs.
  • Set up custom TradingView alerts specifically isolating KRW market dominance.
  • Trade the lag on international platforms before the arbitrage bots fully close the gap.

Is this actually a viable strategy, or am I just setting myself up to get wrecked by high-frequency firms? Honestly, any raw advice on handling their market-making influence would literally save my sanity today.
