What is a crypto airdrop?

Waking up to find 400 bizarre, unverified tokens suddenly dumped into your cold storage is terrifying—especially when you haven't approved a single transaction in weeks.

Yesterday morning, I connected my MetaMask just to check morning gas fees. Boom. A massive influx of some token ticker I couldn't even pronounce. My stomach completely dropped. Had I blindly signed a malicious contract back in November? Was my seed phrase scraped?

After an incredibly frantic two-hour doomscroll, a few discord veterans told me to breathe. I hadn't been hacked. I just got caught in a protocol snapshot.

Which brings me here, incredibly confused. Seriously, what is a crypto airdrop?

I get the basic theoretical premise. Developers blast out free tokens to early adopters to distribute voting power or—let's be honest—artificially juice their daily active user metrics, right? But the actual operational mechanics are twisting my brain into knots. I read a Q3 2023 security brief indicating almost 28% of unsolicited wallet drops were outright phishing attempts. If I try to dump this random garbage on a DEX, could the hidden smart contract instantly drain my actual ETH?

My Safety Filter Logic

I scratched out a quick rulebook for myself to figure out if an unexpected drop is safe to touch or radioactive. Does this logic map hold up to you guys?

Signal Legit Drop Likely Phishing
Origin A protocol I actually used or bridged to recently. Complete ghost town zero-history token.
Claim Process Tokens just arrive natively, or I claim via their official front-end. Requires me to connect and "verify" my wallet on a weird third-party site.

I'm definitely overthinking this, but the anxiety of clicking the wrong button is crippling. Do you guys use a burner wallet exclusively for claiming? How do you safely secure these freebies without blowing up your entire portfolio? Please point a cautious intermediate in the right direction.
